Houpadlo Tetrao Tetrix a plácačka na mouchy Rest In Peace
Ateliér Šulc
The main theme of the winter semester in Šulc studio was to design a swing for a child of any age. I worked with the idea that most playgrounds and their play elements are unified and do not relate to the place. So I decided to design an outdoor swing for a specific area. I was inspired by the Giant Mountains, where I come from, and the black grouse (Tetrao terix). The grouse is an endangered bird species that is found in the Giant Mountains and has therefore become one of the symbols of the national park.
The construction is made of bent steel tubes and then welded. The entire structure is then covered with a special fabric, which is commonly known as a facade membrane. Usually it is used in architecture, for facades or various roofs. However, I have already been inspired by one such garden swing, which was covered with this type of fabric. But for the final prototype I used a less strong mesh fabric so that I would be able to sew it on a regular sewing machine.
The colour scheme of the swing is based on the colouring of the grouse itself. While the female is subtly coloured brown, the male has glossy black plumage and distinctive red growths above his eyes.
The short assignment of the semester was then to design a fly swatter. I stuck to the material that fly swatters are usually made from, which is injection moulded plastic.
There are perforations in the striking part of the swatter, which greatly increases the accuracy of the swat and the force of the impact when trying to hit the fly. In my design, it also adds a creative element in the form of repeating humorous text. The swatter then becomes not only a practical tool but also a funny object.
